A good chance to see a Leeds - Liverpool Canal "clough". This ground paddle is at the top of the lock before the gates. The paddle or clough handle is lifted, pivoting 90 degrees, to open the sluice. Note that the stones in the lock wall are all dressed even though they are usually underwater.
