There were once complaints about the terrible smell from the manure unloaded at New Lane. Manure was brought up from Liverpool by barge. This was not just horse manure. It also included human waste, animal entrails and ash. The juices from the pile ran to the nearby houses. The fields along the can were fertilised with the waste of Liverpool.
