In Halsall Cutting you can see the sandstone the canal cut through. The sandstone has cross bedding and you can make out channels which cut down into each other. There are also good examples of sorting with upward fining of the grains. This all suggests that Halsall in the Triassic was a desert with rivers flowing through them. Possibly storms causing flash floods. .
